How do major powers forge strategic industries-the foundation of the civil aviation industry

The tenth "World Economic and Political Biweekly Forum" was held on April 15, 2021. Professor Li Wei from the School of International Studies of Renmin University of China gave a lecture on "How do major powers forge strategic industries-the foundation of the civil aviation industry". The lecture was chaired by Senior Fellow Yang Yuan, the Director of the Divison of International Politics of National Institute for Global Strategy/Institute of World Economics and Politics. Chen Chen, Research Fellow of China Machinery Industry Think Tank, Xu Qiyuan, Senior Fellow and Director of the Division of International Development, Jin Junda, Assistant Research Fellow of the Division of International?Politics Theory, Chen Zhaoyuan, Assistant Research Fellow of the Division of Global Governance participated in the discussion. Other researchers of the IWEP and the students of the UCASS attended the lecture.

Professor Li Wei explained that the strategic industries serve as one of the determinants of national strength. Commercial aircraft is one of the typical strategic industries due to its high technical threshold, large capital investment, and long industrial chain. A strong civil aviation manufacturing industry requires corresponding supporting technologies, financial resources, market scale, and diplomatic capabilities. The rise of Boeing and Airbus all met the above conditions. Although China's civil aviation manufacturing industry faces many challenges in the domains of technology, financing, market size, standard setting, and geopolitics, China still owns the basic conditions to develop a strong civil aviation industry. Finally, Professor Li had a lively discussion with the on-site commentators.
